Local SEO Guide for Small Businesses | MancSEO Blog

When someone searches "plumber near me" or "accountant in [your city]", Google shows a map and three business listings before any organic results. Getting into that Map Pack can transform the number of enquiries you receive. Here is how to do it.

1. Claim and Optimise Your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the single most important factor for local SEO. If you haven't claimed yours yet, do it now at business.google.com. Once claimed, optimise every section:

  • Use your exact business name — no keyword stuffing
  • Choose the most accurate primary category
  • Add your full address and service area
  • List all your business hours, including holidays
  • Upload high-quality photos of your premises, team, and work
  • Write a compelling business description with your key services

2. Build Consistent Citations

A citation is any online mention of your business name, address, and phone number (NAP). Consistency is critical — if your address appears differently across different directories, Google loses trust in your listing.

Make sure your NAP is consistent across your website, Google Business Profile, Yelp, Facebook, and any industry-specific directories.

3. Earn and Respond to Reviews

The quantity and quality of your Google reviews is one of the strongest local ranking signals. Actively ask satisfied customers to leave a review. The best time to ask is immediately after a successful job.

Always respond to every review — positive and negative. This shows Google and potential customers that you are engaged and professional.

4. Optimise Your Website for Local Keywords

Your website should include location-specific pages if you serve multiple areas. Even if you only serve one area, make sure your key pages mention the city and region you serve naturally in the content.
